Abstract:

Adherence to guidelines often remains low, including omission of therapies recommended in practice guidelines. To improve the transfer of evidence into clinical practice, effective knowledge translation (KT) strategies are needed. Knowledge translation research in long-term care (LTC) is still in its early stages. Despite high rates of fracture in this setting, there are barriers to the uptake of fracture prevention strategies including vitamin D, calcium and osteoporosis medications. This presentation will outline a model of knowledge translation for prescribing changes in LTC and include examples from two large RCT’s (ViDOS study, GOAL study).

Learning Objectives:

1. To provide an overview of knowledge translation models for prescribing changes in long-term care.

2. To examine the results and lessons learned from the ViDOS and GOAL studies as examples of successful knowledge translation in long-term care.
