Biography
Alvi is currently a PhD. student at the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at McGill University. Previously, he completed an MSc. in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, Alvi worked as a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Canadian Inherited Metabolic Diseases Research Network, where he was involved in research studies seeking to improve care for children with rare metabolic diseases.
Alvi’s research interests focus on the use of large population-based databases to assess the safety and effectiveness of medications used to treat chronic diseases. In addition, Alvi is interested in the application of novel statistical methods to improve causal inference in large pharmacoepidemiologic studies. For his doctoral thesis, Alvi will be assessing the risk of major bleeding events from using antidepressants in patients receiving oral anticoagulant therapy. He will be conducting his doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Robert Platt and Dr. Christel Renoux at the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at McGill University and the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology at the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital.
