Shyam Maharaj trained as a Pharmacist in his native country Trinidad and Tobago where he also completed a Master’s degree in Pharmacology at the University of the West Indies. He taught Pharmacy Practice there for 2 years before migrating to Canada where he became licensed as a Pharmacist. Shyam is currently pursuing his PhD in Medical Sciences at Mc Master University. His research examines the cellular events which contribute to lung injury and repair. Shyam’s focus is a Circulating Mesenchymal Cell precursor, the fibrocyte, he aims to better understand the biology of this cell and its exact role(s) in lung injury and repair. He works with a team whose focus is translation medicine and they isolate these cells from patient samples. Their work adds to the existing evidence that this cell may prove to be a useful biomarker of lung injury due to pathological or possibly pharmacological insults.
